Troubleshooting with a ping test

A ping test checks the connection between your computer and a website or server by sending small data packets and measuring the response time. It’s useful for identifying network issues, like whether your website is accessible or if there are problems with your internet connection.

When Should You Use a Ping Test?

  • If a website won’t load but other websites are working.

  • If emails aren't sending or receiving properly.

  • To check if your internet connection is experiencing delays or dropped signals.

How to Perform a Ping Test

On Windows:

  1. Click the Start Menu, then type Command Prompt (or cmd) in the search bar and open it.

  2. In the Command Prompt window, type:

    ping yourdomain.com

(Replace yourdomain.com with the actual website or server address you're testing).

  3. Press Enter to run the test.

  4. Your computer will send small data packets to the website and display results showing response times.

  5. To copy the results:

    • Click and drag to highlight the text.

    • Press Ctrl + C to copy and then paste it into Notepad or a support ticket.

On macOS:

  1. Open the Applications folder, then go to Utilities and open Network Utility.

  2. Click on the Ping tab.

  3. Enter the website or server address in the domain field.

  4. Click Ping to start the test.

  5. To copy the results:

    • Press Command + C, then paste (Command + V) into Word or a support ticket.

Understanding the Results

  • Replies received → Your website is reachable.

  • Request timed out → There may be network issues preventing access.

  • High response times → This indicates slow connections, which could be temporary or an issue with your internet provider.

If you’re unsure how to interpret the results or still experience connectivity issues, feel free to open a support ticket for further assistance.
