How do I clear my browser cache?

What is a browser cache?

Each time you visit a website, your web browser will cache some of the data (that is, it stores it) to allow for quicker loading in future, so it doesn’t have to download the duplicate files all over again.

Sometimes this can cause issues where you’re making changes to your website. Still, your browser might not necessarily refresh that data straight away, so you may need to periodically clear your browser’s cache to get a ‘fresh’ copy.

How to clear your cache

When following the steps below, your browser may also offer options to clear stored passwords, etc. This is unnecessary for cache clears and may cause you some grief, so those options are best left unchecked.

Chrome (Windows/macOS/Linux)

  1. In the browser bar, enter the following and hit Enter:

    chrome://settings/clearBrowserData
  2. Select the items you want to clear (e.g. Empty the cache and Delete cookies and other site and plug-in data).

    • You have the option to clear your cache for a specific period; to clear your entire cache, select the beginning of time.

  3. Click Clear browsing data to confirm.

Suggestion: You can also click the three-dot menu in the top-right > More tools > Clear browsing data

Chrome (Android/iOS)

  1. Tap the three-dot vertical menu.

  2. Tap History > Clear browsing data.

  3. Choose Time Range, check Cached images/files, and tap Clear Data.

Safari (macOS)

  1. Open Safari and select > Preferences.

  2. Go to the Privacy tab and click Manage Website Data > Remove All.

  3. Then go to the Advanced tab and enable Show Develop menu in menu bar.

  4. From the top menu, click Develop > Empty Caches.

  • Optional: for Safari on iPhone/iPad:

    • Go to: Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Safari (iOS)

  1. Open Settings > Safari.

  2. Tap Clear History and Website Data.

Firefox (Windows/macOS/Linux)

  1. Menu (≡ icon) > Settings > Privacy & Security.

  2. Under Cookies and Site Data, click Clear Data or scroll to History > Clear History.

  3. Choose Time Range and select Cache and/or Cookies.

  4. Click OK.

Edge (Chromium-based)

  1. In the browser bar, enter the following and hit Menu (the three-dot horizontal icon) > Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services > Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear.

  2. Select the items you want to clear (e.g. Cached images and files and Delete cookies and other site data).

    • You have the option to clear your cache for a specific period; to clear your entire cache, select the beginning of time.

  3. Click Clear browsing data to confirm.

  • Suggestion: You can also click the three-dot menu in the top-right > More tools > Clear browsing data.

Internet Explorer (7-11)

  • Internet Explorer is no longer supported by Microsoft. We strongly recommend switching to a modern browser like Edge, Chrome, Firefox or if required Safari
